American Family Association

Full Profile

The American Family Association is a conservative advocacy group that aligns itself with nativist and Islamophobic ideologies. AFA President Tim Wildmon and Director of Issues Analysis Bryan Fischer are two of the organization’s most visible figures promoting anti-Islam prejudice. The AFA is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

President Timothy Wildmon Believes Islam is "a Religion of War" that does not Encourage Charity

Wildmon is quoted as saying, “[Islam] is, in fact, a religion of war, violence, intolerance, and physical persecution of non-Muslims.’

He also falsely alleges, “One of the most striking differences is that Christianity teaches, practices, and encourages charity. Islam does not.”

Bryan Fischer Believes Islam is not Protected by the First Amendment

Bryan Fischer hosts Focal Point on the American Family Radio network. The network's "mission is to give voice to the American Family Association."

In 2013 Fischer said, “If we are in the Last Days, then Islam is clearly the religion that Satan is promoting to be the counterfeit alternative to Christianity.”

According to Fischer, the First Amendment does not apply to Muslims, “[The Founders] weren’t providing any cover or shelter for the free exercise of Islam or even Judaism or even atheism. They weren’t saying you can’t do it, I want to be clear on that, they weren’t prohibiting that, they were just saying that is not what we are talking about here. Islam has no fundamental First Amendment claims, for the simple reason that it was not written to protect the religion of Islam,” Fischer wrote in a blog post. He later added, “The First Amendment was written by the Founders to protect the free exercise of Christianity. They were making no effort to give special protections to Islam. Quite the contrary.”

On September 11, 2012, Bryan Fischer wrote, “First, we must understand that the threat to our freedoms comes not from radical Islam but from Islam itself. While there may be moderate Muslims in America, there is no such thing as moderate Islam.”

In blog posts, Fischer has called for an end to Muslim recruiting by the military, an end to immigration by Muslims, and notoriously claimed that Native American’s live in poverty because they have not accepted Christianity.

In addition to his work with the AFA, Fischer is the host of conservative radio program, Focal Point.
