Jewish Communal Fund

Type: Faith-Based Donor Advised Fund

The Jewish Communal Fund is the largest Jewish donor advised fund in the country. It describes itself as “dedicated to the welfare and security of the Jewish community at home and abroad,” and has donated extensively to food pantries and Jewish Community Centers, particularly in New York.

Alongside funding civic and philanthropic projects, the Fund has granted in excess of $3.2 million to anti-Muslim groups over three years, from 2014 to 2016. It granted the Middle East Media Research Institute close to half a million dollars, and the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) $110,000. AFDI is led by the bigot Pamela Geller and is responsible for virulent anti-Muslim ads in public spaces including, “Islamic Jew-Hatred: It’s in the Quran,” and an image depicting a man with his face wrapped in a keffiyeh, next to the message “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah.”,

The Jewish community’s funding of anti-Muslim hate groups has caused controversy following a series of troubling reports that the San Francisco Jewish Federation, the Los Angeles Jewish Community Foundation, and New York’s Jewish Communal Fund all support far-right, xenophobic networks that, in part or wholly, vilify Muslims and perpetuate Islamophobia in the public arena.
