Fidelity Charitable Fund

Type: Donor Advised Fund

Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund is a donor advised fund that contributes significant financial backing to mainstream nonprofit organizations that provide critical support to civil society, the very fiber of American democracy. It is one of the country’s largest grantmaking organizations, distributing $3.8 billion in a single fiscal year from 2016 to 2017 alone. Like Schwab, the Fidelity Fund ranks among its top recipients the following humanitarian organizations: The Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, The Salvation Army, Oxfam, and UNICEF. It also supports the valuable work of advocacy groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Fund’s grants range across the spectrum of charitable giving, from supporting disaster relief efforts, including the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, to providing funding to Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief organization in the country.

Unfortunately, Fidelity Charitable is also responsible for giving grants to 34 anti-Muslim groups, the largest number among any identified donor. From 2014 to 2016, Fidelity channeled more than $800,000 to the David Horowitz Freedom Center, more than $615,000 to the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, and $430,000 to the Lawfare Project.

The Executive Director of the Lawfare Project, Brooke Goldstein has written a book titled, Lawfare: The War Against Free Speech: A First Amendment Guide for Reporting in an Age of Islamist Lawfare, and given interviews, speeches and testimonies about the threat of “Islamist lawfare,” “Radical Islam,” and “Legal Jihad” on western societies. Goldstein has said in an interview, “Islamophobia … is a contrived term that was invented by the Muslim Brotherhood with the sole purpose of stigmatizing those who are engaged in dialogue about militant Islam.” She also stated, “Issues of public concern and national security include the imminent threat of militant Islam.”
